@PPP - thanks for the insights, do give us more details on the offline bit.

@Anr - First step to get viral marketing going is to have something exciting, and that something exciting coming out in a different way than ever before, and that coupled with a stable medium of transfer which is easy to understand and where you spend the least time in configuring yourself to understand the medium.

how does one get that first step in viral mktg going? Or is it something one prays for and once in a while sometimes gets lucky?

maybe, you need to be part of some influential networks like those in the silicon valley? I do believe that there are and would have been many potent ideas in India too. Do those have a comparable chance of success?

Just that my ego doesn't allow me to be his Fan. Following him on twitter doesn't hurt my ego.

Also, just my two cents:
Maybe twitter became popular in India with the #mumbai tag, but it was already huge in the US/Europe by then.
Many people who attend tech conferences regularly, have mentioned that Twitter people hard sold themselves at each of the conferences (huge banners, free accounts, what not).
There is a very strong offline component to their growth (i dare say larger than the online/viral part).

<a href="#comment-1524" rel="nofollow">@ natrajan</a>
Actually you can become a 'fan' of him on FB, which has the same functionality as 'follow'. You get his updates on your stream. Celebs like Federer, ColdPlay are using this very well

Twitter has substituted google reader and epaper for me.. Very well written post. Especially where you have applied jargon like social media, networking to twitter and explained how it actually achieves it.

I think it is sort of evolution on the net. First there was Orkut but then people started feeling that it shares information in public and slowly people moved to Facebook. Next came twitter where you are only sharing what you want to share and there is very limited privacy and still people like it.
I head the term networking a lot nowdays! and truly Twitter is the only online networking tool! Rest all just connect with people you have already met.

I can follow Shashi Tharoor on Twitter. But I can't be friends with him on Facebook/Orkut.

That's the fundamental difference

Yes indeed....

This is what's been running in my mind for a couple of Days..

Because we follow each Other so I guess you will know when I am most active on Twitter and when not...
